Your Network Is NOT Your Net Worth
What? Don’t we use platforms like Twitter, and LinkedIn exactly for that?
How come I have a contrarian view?
There are so many people and companies who highlight the importance of networking. Well, that’s because it serves them well.
There is more to it than meets the eye.
Ask yourself these questions-
- How many people do you approach for career advice?
- How many people are invested in your progress?
- How many people really know you?
I bet, only a handful.
Networking is just an act. It’s meaningful connections that you really need to care about.
Sure, add people to your profile list but your real worth is in the working relationships that you build.
I have heard it from the influencers, and wise content creators and they all interact with a very small group of people on a daily/weekly basis.
Others are just aquaintances. Even if you are joining to apply for let’s say an MBA, you need only 1 LOR.
Now the question is how to create meaningful connections.
Focus on your craft. That’s your real worth.
The best value you can be to anyone is to be yourself.
Rather than focusing on the number of followers/connections, build something people need and they will come to you.
Have a set of skills that are helpful to others and make you grow.
Your skills will get you access to the best folks in areas of your interest.
Once they realize you are serious about what you are doing, they will assist you in anything and everything.
This tiny yet impactful community will take you to places.
You don’t need to know 50 people to guide you in your career, know a few thoroughly and you will do well.
The leverage is in quality when it comes to knowing people and not in quantity.
